A dining room in a box / Uma sala na caixinha

There is nothing like a personalized present and shadow boxes are perfect for weddings and special celebrations. This one I made for a friend who just got married. The secret is in the picture. Find one that says a lot about the couple and use it as a protagonist in the scene.

I chose a miniature dining room, colored parts of the furniture, chose a miniature rug, made the chandelier and added the photo. I applied patina painting technique (tutorial below) to match the paper and here is the result.

Here is the step by step:

1. Choose the miniature furniture you want and paint.

1. Escolha as miniaturas de móveis em resina, fáceis de encontrar em lojas de artesanato. Pinte o que quiser.

2. For the couch I always like to add a throw, it gives it some color and charm.

2. Eu sempre coloco um paninho no sofá, fica bonito.

3. Now the patina. It's a lot of work, but an easy technique. First, paint the background color.

3. Na pintura usei a técnica de pátina. Primeiro, pinte a cor que ficará por baixo.

4. Then add the main color you want and you can always add more tones depending on how you want it to look. Here I used blue and bege.

4. Depois a cor principal, você pode colocar quantas camadas quiser, depende do efeito que quer.

5. Then sand it with sand paper (use a thick one and I learned it the painful way, literally), until you achieve the desired look.

5. Depois lixe com uma lixa grossa, senão você acaba ficando com dor no braço e a cor de baixo nunca aparece. :)

6. Add the miniatures and voilà!! Have fun with your project and feel free to send me questions. To me, crafting is about sharing and I'll be happy to help you.

Card Kit Boxes / Caixas para kits de cartão

So you make tons of cards and don't know what to do with them? Make an envelope box and embelish it with a belt. Turn it into a present!! Everybody loves cards and we usually don't have one handy when we need to send one.

It's a great way to keep your hobby going, isn't it? Here are some examples.

Para nós que fazemos cartão, às vezes nem sabemos o que fazer com tantos! Então, uma dica é fazer uma caixinha no formato de envelope e preparar uns kits. Ótimo presente. Eu defendo que não há nada como receber cartão no correio, essa história de email tá chatíssimo. Então, faça e distribua aos amigos, assim a corrente anda.  :)

Swan Lake in a box / Lago dos Cisnes numa caixinha

My dear friend Rachel is a ballerina, so I made this shadow box for her. She dressed up one day as a black swan, so I took the chance, photographed her and here is her little box with a step by step tutorial just in case you want to try it. Yes, it's a lot of work, but certainly worth it!

Minha amiga Raquel dança balé, fiz essa caixinha pra ela, aproveitei uma foto dela vestida de Lago dos Cisnes. Aqui vai o passo a passo:

1. Put together your ideas: materials, images and always a personalized picture. Rachel is the on in the frame.

1. Junte os materiais que você vai precisar: uma foto da pessoa é o divisor de águas, claro.

2. Google Images is great for finding pictures. Glue the ones you like.

2. O Google Images é ótimo para encontrar foto do tema que você precisa.

3. Here the background was black, so I painted the sides of the paper in order to blend it with the dark wall.

3. A cor principal que usei aqui foi preto. Para ficar mais bem acabado, pinte o lado do papel cortado, senão fica uma diferença entre o contorno e a parede.

4. And added Rachel's picture.

4. Acrescente a foto.

5. I found some great miniature ballerina slippers, so I sewed them together for the bottom of the box.

5. Encontrei umas miniaturas de sapatilhas, deu um toque à caixinha.

6. And of course, feathers!!! Swan Lake after all..

6. Em se tratando de O Lago dos Cisnes, claro que acrescentei várias plumas.

7. I must say this was the hardest part: I sewed the dress. Yes!!! Made it look like the picture I found online.

7. Aqui veio a parte mais difícil. Fiz o vestido igual ao modelo que encontrei online. Mas deu um toque todo especial.

8. On the left side, the white swan.

8. No lado direito, o cisne negro; no esquerdo, o branco. E pronto, caixinha terminada.

9. On the right, the black.

10. In the center, the ballet corps.

10. No centro, o corpo do balé.

Stained Glass panel / Vitrais

I have always loved stained glass, so I decided to try it. For these I used brilliant glossy glass paint and liquid leading. But I just bought at Michael's and Joann's some glass strips and I will try them next time. You can also find them at Amazon.

Sempre amei vitrais, então resolvi aprender. Aqui usei o verniz vitral, facilmente você encontra em lojas de artesanato e pasta relevo. Não se trata do vitral profissional, claro, que usa solda e tal, mas fica super bonito.
